Consumer prices in Malaysia rose 2.7 percent year-on-year in December of 2015, as compared to a 2.6 percent increase in November and in line with market consensus. It is the highest figure since August, as a faster increase in prices of food offset a further decline in cost of transport while cost of housing & utilities were steady. Inflation Rate in Malaysia averaged 3.67 percent from 1973 until 2015, reaching an all time high of 23.90 percent in March of 1974 and a record low of -2.40 percent in July of 2009. Inflation Rate in Malaysia is reported by the Department of Statistics Malaysia.






Malaysia Inflation Rate at 4-Month High
Consumer prices in Malaysia rose 2.7 percent year-on-year in December of 2015, as compared to a 2.6 percent increase in November and in line with market consensus. It is the highest figure since August, as a faster increase in prices of food offset a further decline in cost of transport while cost of housing & utilities were steady. 

Year-on-year, prices increased for: food (+4.6 percent in December from +4.1 percent in November); alcoholic beverages & tobacco (+22.8 percent from +20.7 percent); clothing & footwear (+0.8 percent from +0.6 percent); furnishing, household equipment & routine maintenance (+4.2 percent from +3.8 percent); health (+4.6 percent from +4.4 percent); education (+2.6 percent from +2.5 percent); restaurants & hotels (+4.7 percent from +4.6 percent) and miscellaneous goods & services (+5.4 percent from +5.9 percent). In contrast, prices declined for transport (-6.2 percent from -5.2 percent). Prices remained steady for housing, water, electricity, gas & other fuels (+2.5 percent) and recreations services & culture (+2.6 percent).

Among food & non-alcoholic beverages, customers had to pay more for: food (+4.6 percent in December from +4.2 percent in November); food at home (+4.7 percent from +4.1 percent); rice, bread & other cereals (+2.0 percent from +1.8 percent); meat (+3.3 percent from +0.7percent); oils & fats (+0.9 percent from +0.8 percent), fruits (+6.5 percent from +5.9 percent), vegetables (+12.0 percent from +8.9 percent); food products (+6.3 percent from +5.7 percent) and food away from home (+4.4 percent from +4.3 percent). While prices remained steady for sugar, jam, honey, chocolate & confectionary (+1.9 percent), cost moderated for fish & seafood (+5.7 percent from +6.6 percent) and coffee, tea, cocoa & non-alcoholic beverages (+3.1 percent from +3.3 percent).

On a monthly basis, consumer prices remained unchanged in December, following a  0.6 percent rise in November. Upward prices pressure was seen for: food & non-alcoholic beverages (+0.7 percent); alcoholic beverages & tobacco (+1.7 percent); furnishing, household equipment & routine maintenance (+0.1 percent); health (+0.3 percent) and education (+0.3 percent). In contrast, downward prices pressure came from: clothing & footwear (-0.1 percent), transport (-2.3 percent), communication (-0.1 percent) and miscellaneous goods & services (-0.2 percent). Prices remained unchanged for: housing, water, electricity, gas & other fuels and recreation services & culture

For full year of 2015, consumer prices rose 2.1 percent.
